Redmine Bug #5063 (New): Morpho Data Package Editor degrades when Editing Data Table Accesshttps://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/50632010-06-29T20:52:03ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

(Ben L. was an eyewitness to this - 6.29.2010)
Running Windows 7 Enterprise.
I have added six data objects/tables to an existing Morpho Data Package (knb.245.x) and am adding access permissions to each table using the
Data/Edit Data Table Access wizard. I add custom access permissions
for two individuals on the first three tables, clicking the OK button
at the bottom of each dialog but NOT saving the package between data
tables.

Problem: As I click through the Data Package Editor tabs corresponding
to each data table, Morpho performance slows dramatically, until, after
the third tab/table, Morpho has ground to a halt and I have to wait 5-10
minutes for the menu bar items to change from grey to black.

After one of these long waits, when I save the package (local), the save
takes about three minutes.

This makes it very difficult to move forward in a Data Package editing session.

Last week when a similar thing happened, the Metacat had crashed and
Morpho had locked up. But that did not happen in this case. Performance
is just incredibly slow.

RR
Bug #5060 (New): Inform Morpho user in cases where Morpho fails due to failure of Metacat connectionhttps://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/50602010-06-25T17:25:41ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

The Metacat connection can fail during a Morpho session, causing Morpho to cease working (e.g., the user interface stops accepting keyboard input). When this happens, the Morpho user will mistakenly assume that Morpho has failed, and respond by shutting down Morpho, etc. Unaware of the real cause of the problem,
the user will also fail to notify Sys Admin of the failed Metacat connection. All of this wastes time and effort.

If the user knew the underlying cause of their system failure. they could take more appropriate action; e.g., leave the Morpho session open, waiting for the Metacat to re-connect; notify the Sys Admin, switch to another task for a while, etc.

Suggestion: Have Morpho monitor the Metacat connection, and when the connection fails, display a message similar to: 'Metacat connection has failed, please stand by'. Possibly also display a message when the Metacat connection resumes.
Bug #5059 (New): SAXPParseException error when entering data package search string misleading!https://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/50592010-06-25T00:41:25ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

Using Morpho 1.8, NOT logged in (unable to log in to my account), I entered a query string, for a Network Search. When I started a search, got the error message shown in the attached screenshot.

As it turns out, the problem is that the Metacat server is broken. But it took me 10 minutes to establish this.

Would you make the error message for this fault be: "Metacat Server is broken - Network Search not possible"? Or something similar?

Rick R
Bug #4628 (New): Testing version 1.7.1 beta: Morpho Tree Editor produces invalid documentshttps://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/46282009-12-14T20:56:10ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

Condition: I am using the Morpho Tree Editor to edit the columns in an attribute table. The table was, incidentally, imported into an existing Data Package (originally, nceas.906.5) using the 'Import MS Access Database' utility.

Here are the steps that I took:
Click Green Edit button, wait about 45 seconds for the Morpho Editor to
appear. I am editing column attributes by clicking each attribute in the 'tree', changing the value, and then clicking on the next attribute. This is a very efficient way to edit multiple table columns/attributes. Once I have modified all of the attributes, and am ready to save them, I click the OK button. Sometimes, the editor window closes and the modifications appear in the attribute table display (on the right side of the screen).

But several times, when I click OK, the Morpho editor screen freezes
and the first of the attached messages displays. Trying to recover from the error, I click the 'X' box in the upper right corner of the screen. When I click
to close the window (URC), the screen goes away and the second message
appears. My changes to the table metadata do not appear, and have been lost.

Note: the alternative method of editing column metadata, the Edit Column Documentation option, requires more mouse clicks and about 25 % more time
to use for a given group of attribute edits. this is because of the delay (of several seconds) between the time that the user clicks the mouse on an attribute column and the time that the selection 'registers' on the screen so that the user
can edit the field.) And I have some evidence that even using this method to edit columns, sometimes the attribute edits are not saved to the table.

Because of these defects, it takes a very long time to edit large groups of column attributes on stored tables in Morpho. The defects make it difficult to do error-free edition of column attributes. I think that many would-be Morpho users will become frustrated with this performance and resist using the software.
Bug #3476 (New): Search Result Selection list elements change when selectedhttps://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/34762008-08-26T22:33:40ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

Intermittent software 'lockup' (approx 50 % of attempts results in the condition):

Occurs on Ubuntu 7.10 platform, JRE 1.5.0.13, Morpho 1.6.1 -

To re-create:

1) Start Morpho (from command line) and log in
2) Search Network and Local, All, search string: 'NCEAS 2017'
3) From search results, select (double click) DocumentID chadden.48.2
for viewing.
4) Here is what happens: When I select the item, it immediately changes
to another item in the list (e.g., to the entry for DocID nceas.149.17)
5) When this happens, the list 'locks up', and selections can not be made.

Again, this only happens about 50 % of the time, and only on Ubuntu (so far).
Bug #3475 (New): Morpho data table search results do not displayhttps://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/34752008-08-26T22:28:48ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

Again, this only happens about 50 % of the time, and only on Ubuntu (so far).
Bug #1507 (In Progress): New Data Table Wizard: Definition of new Unit Typehttps://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/15072004-04-16T22:36:55ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

New Data Table Wizard: I am defining a new custom unit and am asked to Enter
the name of the new unit type. I am unsure what this means. What is the
meaning of Unit Type and how is it different from Unit Name? Could use a
better explanation or some examples.

And, the Unit Type Definition is very minimal, and does not address issues
such as, why would I ever enter more than 1 Unit Type Definition.
Bug #1287 (In Progress): Enable multiple movements of attribute lines in Data Information Screen ...https://projects.ecoinformatics.org/ecoinfo/issues/12872004-01-24T00:19:55ZRick Reevesreeves@nceas.ucsb.edu

In New Datatable Wizard / Data Information screen / Attribute list control,
when using the Move Up or Move Down buttons, user needs to re-highlight the
item being moved after each single movement.
When using New Datatable Wizard / Data Information Screen and populating the
Attribute list with table column attributes: When using the Move Up / Move Down
buttons, the user must re-highlight the item being moved after each single
movement / button click. Would be faster if the item stayed highlighted and
movable until the user selected another item OR moved to another window.
