This must be designed my michael, evaluated by bob, implemented by gabe. Pass
the bug along to the others as one portion gets completed.

high level of user customization: user selects fields to view on plots

some of this is underway currently, using inline styles to alter what gets
shown. Ideal solution would be to store user's preferences in a directory with
their user ID and several views that they have preferences on. Then styles
could be included with a <link>. the generic (unlogged in user) would have views
similarly defined, but not editable by users. Any missing .css would just be
ignored.
