Prompt asks for credentials in Chrome on Android 4.4.2

Description

When I navigate to search.test.dataone.org and KNB in Chrome 41.0.2272.94 on my phone (Android 4.4.2), I get a prompt that asks for credentials. If I click Cancel, another prompt pops up. After I click Cancel and rotate through new prompts about 6 times, they stop popping up and I can navigate the site as usual. See attached screenshot.

This issue seems similar to what users were experiencing in Safari (#6457) except the site doesn't completely fail to load afterwards.
