I replaced the href for the 'Data' link in the navbar with a class show-new-dataCatalogView. The navbar view now listens to click events on this class to clear the search model and route to the data view via the Backbone router. This way the DataCatalogView render() does not need to be altered, a special link such as /#data/new doesn't need to be used, and it is template-based, meaning themes can opt-out of this functionality.
